Até que um bispo português recém-nomeado para a cátedra episcopal de Olinda, que se achava vacante, solicitou à Coroa portuguesa a doação do dito Colégio para a Santa Igreja Catedral, para que nele instalasse um seminário, segundo o molde e os decretos do Concílio de Trento.
